Thanks for the quick reply, Marc. So here’s part two of my question: Depending on which charts you look at, the “overweight” category typically starts at around 20-25% BF. As I mentioned, I just had a DEXA and came in at 20%. 21% is considered overweight (according to the chart that was included with the analysis). At 20%, I’m pretty trim. No doubt there is fat there to lose, but I just can’t imagine an objective fitness/medical professional calling me “overweight”. So, just where did these numbers come from? Do you happen to have any references that show that BF% > 21% is unhealthy? Do you generally agree with such values? If not, when do you think a person “crosses over” to a body comp that has negative health impacts? I mean, clearly one has to have some fat or you’ll die. When does it turn from a positive to a negative, health-wise? Do you happen to know of research that supports any of this? I should add that the charts in the analysis I got are made specifically for DEXA and not for calipers, although that just makes things even more confusing, as the DEXA usually registers about 6% HIGHER than calipers, which would imply that “overweight” would begin 6 percentage points LOWER (or at 14%!!) when using calipers. I’m concerned that people (me!) may be going for levels of BF that are lower than necessary if good health is the primary concern (rather than definition, cut, or contest prep.). The goal is to eat mostly whole, unprocessed foods.
